Allah is teaching us manners. “When you are greeted with a greeting, respond with a better greeting, or return it.”
(Qur’an 4)
When we greet Allah by believing in Him, He returns the greeting by handing us the key to being close to Him.
They key is in your hand! “Remember Me, and I will remember you.” (Qur’an 2) Once you believe in Him, the key to being close to Him shifts over to you.
He says since you believe in Me, here is the key. If you would like Me to remember you, remember Me. “If you support God, He will support you.” (Qur’an 47)
Therefore, the first step is from your side - My slave keeps on coming close to Me.. until I love him, I become his hearing with which he hears, his seeing with which he see, …” (Hadith)
Then He says: “If My slave approaches Me an inch, I approach him an arm’s length..” (Hadith)
Therefore, if you would like Allah to approach you, you need to approach Him first. So who has the key to being close to Allah? You do.
What is this prestigiousness? He has relieved you of most of the effort. If you want Me to remember you, remember Me, I am at your command! If you want Me to approach you an arm’s length, approach Me and inch’s length. If you want Me to approach you multiple arms’ length, approach Me an arm’s length. If you want Me to run your way, I will run, just walk in my direction. I will come running to you.
When you see someone you like and respect from a distance sitting down then you approach to greet them. As soon as they see you approaching, they stand up and rush over to you to greet you. So the key is in whose hand?
If you want meet someone of a high position in society to help you achieve a worldly matter of yours, you need to ask for an appointment first, right? Either they accept or reject. If they accept, they then decide the following:
- The topic, what do you want to discuss
- The time to meet
- The place
And they are the ones who end the meeting. After two minutes, this man of high position will stand up. This means the meeting has ended even though your discussion might not be over. This is how humans reign over other humans. So once again, he either accepts your appointment request or rejects it. If he reject, then the matter is already over. If he accepts, he decides on the topic, the time, place and when to end the meeting. Dealing with Allah on the other hand is nothing like this.
I have told you before that our slavery to Allah is prestigious. Is this even considered slavery?! I am slave to a Lord that welcomes my meeting without any appointments. He is the Almighty and the Most Prestigious through His Holiness, but I meet Him whenever and wherever I please! Whether you want to meet Him right here, at the mosque, at home, or at any place, you just need to stand up and say Allahu Akbar and you immediately become in His presence. And I talk to Him about any subject I please. And after all that, He tells you that He doesn’t bore from your conversation until you bore. He is not constrained by a schedule.
Accordingly, He taught His Prophet Muhammad ﷺ the highest manners. If a man shook the Prophet ﷺ hand, the Prophet ﷺ would never let go of the man’s hand until the man himself pulled his own hand away. These are Divine manners.
Now, is this slavery or prestigiousness? It’s prestige of the highest honour. It’s all in my hands. Therefore don’t consider our slavery to Allah as subordination. This is subordination to a Generous Lord Who wants to provide you, not to take away from you. The more you increase your slave hood to Him, the more He provides you! You hate the concept and the word “slavery” because humans have tainted and tabooed it! Because the human master will always suck the life out of his slaves. But slave hood to Allah, the slave takes the good of his Master.
